LAIR: Partial Project 2

The aim of this project is to develop a card game with the theme of the Industrial Revolution. Students will use the core rules of the popular card game Dominion. Dominion is set in the medieval world, but instead of using the existing game theme, the students will replace the medieval theme by an Industrial Revolution theme.
Designing game rules is a rather complex task which requires extensive testing, hence, students will not have to design the actual game play, but instead will only have to redesign the “action cards” of the game. This task will require history research, creative thinking, and digital design.

Task
Students will design 26 different cards (20 action cards, 3 resource cards, and 3 victory cards) The action cards can be based on any event, technology, theme, policy, etc.
Each card must contain…
A Title
A Picture
An Action
One Summary Sentence of Historic Event/Theme, etc.
A cost

Additionally, students will have to provide a 75-125 word explanation of each card, which will be submitted in a separate word document.
The explanation must include:
1.       Name of Card
2.       Explanation of the theme of the card, including an explanation of why the event, theme, person, technology, or policy was important in the course of the Industrial Revolution
3.       Explain why you chose a specific action effect for the card

The submission will consist of 26 individually designed cards, and their explanation.

Project Roadmap
1.       Form a group. (3 members)
2.       Decide which group member will research which time period, or category. (See Appendix IV)
3.       Every group member will be research their category or time period.
4.       After researching the time period each student will conceptualize 12 different cards (a basic design, reflecting the idea of the card) corresponding to a theme related to that time period, or category.
5.       First team meeting, Friday 07.10.2016: Students present their proposals to their group and the group selects the 26 cards that they like the most. Each student will be assigned a set amount of cards to design, and develop an explanation for.
6.       Each student works on the design, content and explanation of the cards.
7.       Second team meeting, Friday 14.10.2016: Each student presents their progress. This meeting will also be used for ensuring design coherence, as well as addressing any other issues.
8.       Submission of project, Thursday 20.10.2016:  Final version should be a PDF file with the design of your cards & word document with explanation of cards, including cover with names of group members.

To get started
1.       Read the rules of the game (Appendix I) and watch the youtube video (Appendix II)
2.       Download the game, and play it a few time with your friends in order to get a sense of the game. (Appendix III)
3.       Start researching your time period and jot down ideas for cards (Name, Image, Action, Historic significance, etc.)

Some thoughts on good card design
1.       The design of the card is not just the image, but also the title of the card. A creative card title enhances the game experience.
2.       Be cohesive with your visual design. Use either images or produce original artwork. Do not mix different styles when designing the images.

Grading
Design 25%, Creativity 25% (see Team Grading for details)
Each student must produce an equal amount of card explanations. The student will be evaluated according to the explanation of the cards.
In the card explanation appendix, each student must add their name at the end of the explanations that he/she produced.
Evaluating criteria of explanation (see Individual Grading for details)
1.       Is the information in the explanation accurate (15%)
2.       Is the impact on the course of the Industrial Revolution explained (15%)
3.       Clarity of explanation (10%)
4.       Is the action of the card logically justified (10%)

Due date and Summary

The due date is the 20.10.2016.
Each team must digitally submit 26 cards (each one showing both sides on one page), and a Word document containing all the explanations of the cards. Under each explanation the students must write their name in order to identify which student wrote which explanation. The word document must also contain a cover with the student´s names.
